adventure
We booked the pre-sunset camel ride on Cable Beach and were surprised how easy the mount was, a raised platform let us climb up beside the hump rather than clambering on from ground level the way we'd braced for. The guides ran through a proper safety briefing first, how to hold on and what the camel would do at each pace, and the animals themselves seemed completely unbothered, just slow blinking and steady chewing the whole hour. Cable Beach stretches 22 kilometers of white sand, and doing the ride right as the sun dropped, with staff stopping periodically to take our photos, made it worth building the whole evening around.
Traveller notes on Broome
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Forum posters are blunt that February is about the worst time of year to visit Broome weather-wise, with rain roughly one day in three, daytime highs in the mid-30sC, overnight lows in the mid-20sC, and a genuine chance of cyclones and flooding at the height of the monsoon. Posters warn that roads to Cape Leveque, Beagle Bay and One Arm Point are likely closed, cruises to the Buccaneer Archipelago and Rowley Shoals don't run, and it's also stinger season, ruling out ocean swimming north of Ningaloo, Broome included. Posters do note real upsides for the right traveler: genuinely cheap flight and accommodation packages during this low season, a freshly rain-swept beach, and far fewer people around amid the lush green landscape. Posters generally rate February as the toughest month for Broome logistically and weather-wise, workable only for travelers prioritizing low costs and solitude over reliable access and dry conditions.
August is the middle of the Kimberley dry season — late May to early September — and the forum's verdict is unambiguous: peak visitor season, perfect weather, every tour running. The record agrees completely: 31°C by day, 19 overnight, light wind, and zero rain-days. Regulars specifically favour August over July, because the days and nights have warmed a little more by then. The one thing to plan is supply rather than weather — caravan parks are in high demand June through August and want booking well ahead.
