Food & drink

A visitor's account of Bari's famous Orecchiette Street (Via Arco Basso) recommends going from 8am onward, when the local women who've been hand-rolling fresh orecchiette outside their homes for generations are actually out working, rather than later in the day when the street empties out. Their practical route tip: from Bari Centrale station it's about a 15-minute walk toward the sea into the Old Town, following signs to Piazza Mercantile, with Arco Basso just beyond it, all easily walkable without needing public transport.

Traveller notes on Bari

What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.

Forum posters call May close to perfect for Bari and Puglia generally - daytime highs well into the 20sC (one May trip report logged a typical high around 78F) without the summer crowds. The one caveat repeatedly raised: the sea hasn't had a full summer to warm up yet, so swimming is a cooler prospect than the pleasant air temperature might suggest, and weather itself isn't fully guaranteed to cooperate this early in the season. Bari's old town - the alleyways, and watching the local nonne hand-roll orecchiette right outside their homes - is the most-recommended single experience, with posters also pointing toward easy day trips to Alberobello, Matera, Ostuni and Lecce for anyone with extra time.

Forum posters describe November in Bari and wider Puglia as genuinely variable, sometimes mild during the day - one visitor described the first few days of a trip as warm enough to sit outside in short sleeves - but consistently dropping cold at night, cool enough that outdoor evening dining isn't really an option even when daytime feels pleasant. Posters cite typical daytime temperatures around 8-12C with sunny spells especially around midday. Posters are direct that torrential downpours are a real and common feature of southern Italy this time of year, though one visitor's early-November trip saw only light, infrequent rain. Posters describe the overall pattern as a genuine gamble across different years - one November bringing beautiful spring-like weather, another turning chilly and rainy. Posters generally recommend flexible plans and layers for a November visit to Bari.
