Visas & entry
We picked Aswan over Luxor for our felucca sail specifically because the Nile narrows here between pink granite boulders, and the two-hour route around Elephantine Island past the botanical gardens was as scenic as anyone had promised. Since the boats have no engine and rely on the north-to-south wind, our captain explained we'd sail upstream but mostly drift or row on the way back, so departure timing mattered more than we'd expected. We booked the sunset slot from the Corniche, and watching the sun drop behind the desert cliffs while gliding past a Nubian village on the bank was worth planning the whole day around.
Traveller notes on Aswan
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
February in Aswan is the desert winter: about 25°C by day and 10 at night, with no rain at all in the record. That spread is the whole story — the forum's repeated warning is that it can be genuinely chilly in the early morning and the evening even when the afternoon is warm and sunny, which catches Nile-cruise passengers out on deck. One traveller describes a stiff breeze on the run back from Aswan, then warmth enough by the last day to shelter under the awnings. The regulars' timing advice: the end of February into early March is cheaper and dodges the Egyptian holidays.
Forum posters describe August as one of the hottest months in Upper Egypt, with daily highs commonly cited in the mid-to-high 40sC and posters noting Aswan's dry heat, unlike more humid parts of Egypt, means you're dealing purely with the temperature itself rather than added humidity. Posters consistently recommend building a day around the heat rather than against it: an early dawn start for sightseeing, retreating indoors or somewhere air-conditioned by midday, and resuming outdoor activity only once things cool off in late afternoon. Posters recommend loose, long, natural-fiber clothing like thin cotton as the practical uniform for this kind of heat. Posters generally rate August as extremely hot but genuinely manageable for an Aswan visit given consistently clear skies, disciplined early starts and enough water and shade breaks.
