practical

We skipped alcohol and kept drinking water constantly on our first day, following advice that the mild altitude headaches some visitors get are usually just dehydration in disguise. The Centenary Farmers Market was our favorite few hours in the city, wandering between stalls of fresh produce and textiles and actually talking to the vendors. At every dzong and stupa we made sure to walk clockwise, take our shoes off before stepping inside, and keep shoulders and knees covered. Cards worked fine at our hotel but we carried Ngultrum and Indian Rupees in cash for the market and smaller shops.

Notizen von Reisenden zu Thimphu

Was Leute sagen, die dort waren – zuerst die ganzjährigen Notizen, dann Monat für Monat.

Thimphu-forum threads on mid-February conditions describe daytime readings as moderate, generally in the low teens Celsius, dropping toward or below freezing once the sun sets. Posters call this genuinely one of the coldest stretches of the year here, layered clothing standing advice for both sightseeing and any overnight stay outside the capital. Regulars describe accumulation as possible in the surrounding hills, though posters say it reaches the town itself less often than the higher passes nearby. Posters call February surprisingly clear overall, the Punakha festival timing this stretch a real highlight for visitors willing to pack for the cold. Regulars recommend real winter layers for anyone trekking during this window, tented camps at altitude running considerably colder than town. Posters call the clear mountain views worth the chill regardless of season. The record: 12.6C days feeling like 11C, -0.3C nights, 82 percent humidity and 9.5 hours of sun.

Thimphu-forum threads on the best time to visit Bhutan call spring, March through May, one of the strongest windows, posters describing valleys filling with blooming rhododendrons alongside comfortable daytime conditions. Regulars call skies generally clear this month, real mountain views likely for anyone touring or trekking. Posters recommend real warm layers regardless of a pleasant afternoon, nights here still capable of dropping to freezing at this elevation. Regulars call the Jomolhari and Druk Path routes both well-timed for March, trails largely clear and Himalayan views considered outstanding. Posters describe March as neither the busiest nor the quietest month, a middle ground between peak festival crowds and the deep off-season. Regulars recommend booking guides and permits ahead, Bhutan's tourism system requiring both. The record: 16.5C days feeling like 16C, 2.6C nights, an extraordinarily high 168.9mm across nearly 28 days and 81 percent humidity.

April is the month Bhutan forums name for two things at once: the rhododendrons at their peak - there is a festival for them in Thimphu in mid-April - and spring trekking, when the high peaks are actually visible. Their own refinement is to come early in the month rather than late, because the sky turns hazy towards the end of April as the season moves on, and visibility is most of the point on a Himalayan trek. Expect pleasant days and cool nights at 2,300m. Our own row is wetter than the forum's framing suggests - 27.3 precipitation days carrying 172.4mm - so treat the clear-sky promise as a good-year outcome rather than a guarantee. The rest: 19.7C days, 6.2C nights, 10.8 hours of sun and AQI 66.

Forum posters give genuinely mixed reports on May - some describe it as one of the drier spring months with clear blue skies and blooming rhododendrons, part of the broader March-May spring season regarded as one of Bhutan's most beautiful stretches; others describe May as already hazy, cloudy, and rain-prone as the monsoon approaches. The real rainfall pattern backs the second group more than the first: May's rainy-day count sits nearly as high as the June-September monsoon peak, well above the genuinely drier November-January stretch - so despite the 'dry spring' framing some tour operators use, frequent showers are the norm rather than the exception by May. Posters recommend layering and rain gear regardless, since even a rainy May day here tends to clear to sun rather than settling into an all-day washout.

Thimphu-forum threads on a June visit describe this as genuinely monsoon onset, posters naming short bursts of rain and drizzle rather than tropical downpours as the more common pattern in western valleys like Thimphu and Paro. Regulars call mornings genuinely good for walks and cultural sightseeing, several posters naming afternoon showers as the more typical time for rain to arrive. Posters call June genuinely low season here, several regulars naming fewer crowds and lower costs as real advantages for anyone willing to accept some rain. Regulars call high-altitude trekking genuinely not ideal this time of year, several threads naming cultural travel around the valleys as the better fit for a June visit instead. Posters recommend real flexible daily plans built around morning activities, several regulars calling this standard given how reliably afternoon showers arrive. The record: 24.7C days, 14.6C nights, an extraordinarily high 418.7mm across 29 days and 90 percent humidity.

Thimphu-forum threads on a September visit describe early month as the monsoon's tail end, posters naming showers persisting through the first half before clearing by late month. Regulars call late September genuinely the sweet spot, several posters naming clearer skies and lush landscapes as the payoff. Posters call layering genuinely essential given cool nights, several regulars naming fleece and gloves for evenings despite warmer days. Regulars call late September's Thimphu Tshechu genuinely unique, several threads naming this the window for combining the festival with trekking. Posters recommend a light rain jacket and umbrella year-round in Bhutan, several regulars naming these as indispensable. Regulars call September genuinely the gateway to Bhutan's busy season, several threads naming this when visitor numbers pick up after summer. The record: 23.7C days, 14.4C nights, extraordinarily high 298.3mm across over 27 days.

Thimphu-forum threads on October weather describe warm, comfortable afternoons in the high teens to low 20s Celsius, but mornings and evenings turn genuinely chilly, sometimes dropping right toward zero overnight on a clear night. Posters call October one of the most popular months to visit Bhutan, the timing lining up with the Thimphu Tshechu festival, one of the country's biggest annual celebrations, drawing real crowds to both the festival grounds and the usual sightseeing spots. Regulars recommend booking accommodation and permits well ahead given how popular this window runs. Skies generally favor clear stretches this time of year, good for the mountain views the region is known for, though conditions can still shift day to day. Layers covering a real temperature swing are standing advice. The record: 20.9C days feeling like 21C, 8C nights, a notably high 170mm across over 22 days and 84 percent humidity.

Bhutan's forum rates November among the best months — clear skies, little to no rain, and reliably good Himalayan views from Thimphu and Paro both. Regulars' consistent packing note: nights turn properly cold even though the daytime sun feels warm, so a real jacket matters alongside the lighter daytime layers.
