diving

We dove Ras Mohamed National Park out of Sharm el Sheikh and the coral and fish density at Shark and Yolanda Reef genuinely surprised us given how much we'd read about Red Sea over-tourism. A boat day with a reputable dive center ran us around 80 euros, reasonable for two dives plus lunch on deck. We went in October, right in the recommended shoulder window, with water still around 27C so a shorty wetsuit was enough. One diver in our group rented a dive computer from the shop and it gave a noticeably inaccurate profile, so we'd suggest bringing your own if you have one rather than trusting the rental gear.

Notizen von Reisenden zu Scharm asch-Schaich

Was Leute sagen, die dort waren – zuerst die ganzjährigen Notizen, dann Monat für Monat.

February here is a sunny day and a cold evening, and regulars describe the gap precisely: 22 to 24C by day under an almost permanent wind, dropping to about 16C after dark, when a jacket or a thick cardigan earns its place. Our row agrees closely - 23.3C reading as 22C, nights at 15.9C feeling 13C, at 41.8 percent humidity. Rain is 3.5mm across not quite one day. The figure divers actually want is the water: our column says 22.6C where they report 20 to 22C, and their practical verdict is that a 7mm suit is comfortable while a 5mm starts to feel cold thirty or forty minutes into a dive. The record: 10 hours of sun and AQI 48.

March in Sharm is a diving month with a wind problem. The water is pleasant at 23 to 26C - our row says 23C - and the high-season crowds have gone, which is why regulars recommend it. The complication is the Khamsin, the spring wind that blows through March and April and can reach 30 to 40 knots; whether you get a windy spell is luck, and the advice that follows is to pack warmer clothes than the brochure suggests, because a windy March day is cool and the nights can be genuinely cold. Where you stay matters too: Sharm is more sheltered than the Hurghada coast, but Nabq Bay in the north catches it, and Naama Bay, Hadaba and Sharks Bay are the sheltered picks. The record: 26.2C days that feel like 25C, 18.4C nights, humidity 37 percent and 10.9 hours of sun.

April in Sharm is warm air over a sea that has not caught up yet, and the Sharm forum's advice is aimed squarely at divers. Expect the water around 23 to 24C, perhaps a degree more in the shallows, which regulars call a 5mm full suit as an absolute minimum and a 7mm if you feel the chill. April is also often breezy, and the wind is what people actually notice - fantastic weather on land, and a cool moment every time you climb out of the water. Evenings want a light jacket or cardigan. The record: 30.5C days, 21.7C nights, humidity 32 percent, essentially no precipitation days, 11.7 hours of sun and a 23.5C Red Sea.

Forum posters generally call May an ideal month for warm-weather lovers - typically 30-33C by day and 25-26C at night, warm enough to fully enjoy without the more intense baking heat of peak summer. That said, experiences vary meaningfully: some visitors in mid-May reported temperatures spiking into the 40s at the beach, with two separate reports of people fainting at a restaurant during an unusually hot stretch. Humidity stays low throughout, and posters note a beach breeze can make conditions there feel noticeably cooler than around a pool or in a more sheltered spot. Standard family advice given the heat variability: high-factor sunscreen, sun hats and constant hydration, with air-conditioned resort spaces as the fallback on a genuinely hot day.

Regulars describe this month as genuinely roasting hot, evenings still sitting around 35C, though they're specific it counts as more bearable than August's even more intense heat. Our row backs that scorching, genuinely dry read, 37.4C reading as a brutal 38C, over 27.3C nights, with rain entirely absent, zero measured days, and humidity down to a very dry 28 percent. Regulars are consistent the dry heat here feels genuinely different from humid climates, sun protection and steady hydration doing most of the work to stay comfortable rather than the heat itself being unbearable. Late September through mid-November gets named as the more comfortable alternative for anyone with flexible dates. The sea sits at a warm, swimmable 27.8C. The record: 12.8 hours of sun, a 13.8 kph wind and AQI 58.

Sharm El Sheikh-forum threads comparing August to October land firmly on October: much nicer weather, usually quite low humidity against August's uncomfortable heat that doesn't even ease off at night. Sun runs from around 6am to past 5:30pm, and posters call the swimming genuinely great with evenings mild enough that no cardigan is needed even after dark. The record backs the low-humidity read completely: 32C days feeling like 33C, 24.7C nights, essentially none at all, humidity a dry 41 percent, 10.7 hours of sun and a 27.7C sea - hot by any measure, but dry heat rather than the sticky version August brings.

Sharm El Sheikh's forum calls November genuinely good for anyone who doesn't love extreme heat — still hot by day, around 27-30°C, with the sea warm enough at roughly 20°C for comfortable snorkeling. Regulars flag the evenings as noticeably cooler once the sun drops around 4pm, worth a light jacket or pashmina for sitting outside after dark.
