adventure

Our camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes set off around 4:30pm, timed to reach the deepest part of the dunes right as the sunset light turned everything gold. The ride itself is about ninety minutes at a slow, rocking pace, gentle for the first half hour but our hips definitely felt it by the end, which our guide said was completely normal. We wrapped scarves around our faces against the blown sand and were glad for the long sleeves once the wind picked up. Reaching camp around sunset, we were handed mint tea before even getting off the camels, and the tent itself was far more comfortable than we expected from a desert camp.

Notizen von Reisenden zu Merzouga

Was Leute sagen, die dort waren – zuerst die ganzjährigen Notizen, dann Monat für Monat.

Merzouga-forum threads on early-January desert climate describe daytime conditions as genuinely pleasant, posters calling temperatures in the high teens to low twenties comfortable for dune activities in direct sun. Regulars call the overnight drop dramatic though, one visitor camping in the dunes in late December reporting temperatures down close to zero and needing several wool blankets plus layers including hat and gloves to sleep. Posters recommend a dune-side hotel over a basic tent camp if warmth matters, some camps offering portable gas heaters as a real upgrade. Regulars call clear skies and strong sun the standard daytime pattern, real precipitation genuinely rare. Posters recommend real desert-grade sleeping gear regardless of camp type. Regulars call the stargazing a genuine highlight given how consistently clear January nights run. The record: 17.8C days feeling like 13C, 4.5C nights, a scant 0.7 days of measurable precipitation and 39 percent humidity.

February at Erg Chebbi is a genuinely cold-night proposition, which surprises people who packed for the Sahara. Days come in around 19 to 20C; nights average about 6C and regulars report readings close to freezing, with one January account at 1C. The camps hand out wool blankets and the standard advice is to sleep in tracksuit trousers and a jumper underneath them. For anyone unsure - families with small children come up most often - the alternative regulars offer is to stay at one of the hotels by the dunes and take the camel ride without the overnight. The record: 20.3C days that feel like 16C, 6.8C nights that feel like 3C, 0.8 precipitation days, humidity 35 percent and 10 hours of sun.

Merzouga-forum threads on mid-March conditions describe daytime readings as genuinely comfortable, posters recalling weather warm enough for short sleeves without tipping into anything punishing. Regulars call evenings a real contrast, temperatures dropping enough once the sun sets that a proper layer becomes necessary even after a warm afternoon. Posters describe a night in a desert camp as capable of turning genuinely windy, camel-wool blankets named repeatedly as adequate warmth despite the cooler, breezier conditions after dark. Regulars call spring generally the season for the occasional sandstorm, March and April both named as months where a serious blow is at least possible. Posters recommend real protective eyewear and a scarf regardless of forecast. Regulars call the dunes worth the trip in any conditions, sunrise and sunset the standout moments. The record: 24.4C days feeling like 20C, 10.6C nights, a low 29 percent humidity and 10.9 hours of sun.

Merzouga-forum threads on an April visit describe conditions as genuinely balmy under deep blue skies, posters naming daytime highs in the high twenties to low thirties with low humidity as standard. Regulars call spring genuinely capable of surprises despite the generally good weather, several posters naming sudden storms, hail and real cold snaps as possible even in March and April. Posters call occasional sandstorms around the dunes a real factor too, several regulars naming this as something to prepare for regardless of the forecast. Regulars call the overall April window still genuinely one of the better times to visit, several threads naming warm days and manageable nights as the real draw despite the occasional rough patch. Posters recommend packing for both extremes, several regulars calling this standard given how quickly Sahara weather can shift. The record: 28.9C days, 14.9C nights, 2.6mm across under 1 day and 24 percent humidity.

Forum posters describe early-to-mid June daytime temperatures around 40C in the Merzouga dunes, with genuine year-to-year unpredictability that can push the average higher or lower. Posters report real variability at night too - some describe it cooling to a pleasant, comfortable warmth once the sun sets, while another visitor found nights so hot that sleep became difficult once a desert camp's generator (and its air conditioning) shut off for the night. Posters generally recommend a hotel with reliable 24/7 air conditioning over a tented desert camp for a June stay, describing an un-cooled tent as feeling like an oven overnight. Posters note sandstorms are rare despite some travelers' worry about strong winds, with heat rather than sand the more consistent challenge in June.

Merzouga-forum threads on a September visit describe conditions as genuinely intense for most of the month, posters calling even late September still capable of real desert heat, manageable mainly with a pool and air conditioning at camp. Regulars call desert camp prices genuinely wide-ranging, options spanning roughly two hundred fifty dollars up toward twelve hundred for two nights depending on how luxurious the setup. Posters recommend Kanz Erremal and Nomad Palace among the camps named repeatedly by regulars as reliable choices. Regulars call a Fes-to-Merzouga routing a real standard itinerary, several posters planning exactly this multi-day loop through the desert and back. Posters recommend real sun protection and serious water intake regardless of how the evening cools off, daytime conditions here considered genuinely severe even this late in summer. The record: 35.6C days feeling like 41C, 22.2C nights, 15.4mm across over 2 days and 24 percent humidity.

Merzouga-forum threads on October weather call this genuinely one of the strongest months of the year, daytime readings settling into a comfortable range after summer's punishing peak, with nights turning pleasantly cool rather than uncomfortably cold. Posters describe the desert camps and dune camel treks as far more enjoyable this time of year, the midday heat that makes summer visits genuinely grueling largely behind by October. Regulars call this the start of the busier season running through winter, camel treks, overnight desert camps and quad excursions all filling up well ahead given the popularity of the mild, dry conditions. A layer for the evening around the campfire is still worth packing even though the days themselves run warm and comfortable. Posters call sunrise and sunset over the dunes the genuine highlight regardless of exactly which October week is chosen. The record: 29.5C days feeling like 28C, 16.5C nights, a low 31 percent humidity and 9.9 hours of sun.

Merzouga's forum calls December warm by day and genuinely cold once the sun drops — regulars compare it to autumn conditions elsewhere, with one visitor reporting temperatures dropping to around freezing overnight. The trade-off is clear desert skies and some of the best stargazing of the year, so a proper warm layer for camp at night is standard advice.
