Essen & Trinken

We took the KTX down from Seoul, just under two hours with frequent departures and scenic views most of the way, and Daegu felt noticeably less touristy the moment we stepped off the platform. Seomun Market, the oldest and largest traditional market in the country, overwhelmed us in the best way, stall after stall of food and goods with none of the tourist-market pricing we'd hit in Seoul. We queued at a bakery near the market for the local Seomun Castella, a sponge cake cut to exact measurements that locals clearly took seriously. A cable car up Palgongsan gave us panoramic city views at 820 meters, worth the half-day detour on its own. Locals were consistently warmer and more curious about us than anywhere else we visited in Korea.

Notizen von Reisenden zu Daegu

Was Leute sagen, die dort waren – zuerst die ganzjährigen Notizen, dann Monat für Monat.

South Korea-forum threads on yellow dust season place the risk squarely across March into April, driven by wind patterns from China that make it genuinely unpredictable - the standing advice is to carry a mask from a convenience store or pharmacy just in case, since there's no way to know from a forecast alone whether a given week will be affected. Setting the dust aside, March itself is described as sunny most days as the country slowly warms toward spring, still cool enough that layers matter. Daegu's own record: 15C days feeling like 12C, 3C nights, 64mm of rain across 7.6 days, a late 4cm of snowfall still possible and 8.8 hours of sun. The number the dust discussion doesn't quite capture: AQI runs 75 here even on an ordinary March day, well before any dust event pushes it higher.

South Korea forum threads tracking cherry blossom timing note Daegu's blooms typically start around late March, meaning by mid-to-late April the blossoms have generally already fallen in this region - worth knowing before planning a bloom-chasing trip here specifically. On general April weather, posters described mostly clear days punctuated by brief but sometimes heavy rain showers, daytime highs reaching the upper 60s Fahrenheit by late April, and nights still cool enough to want a light layer even though a heavy jacket isn't necessary.

Daegu forum regulars, drawing on the broader South Korea conversation, call May and June the country's best-weather stretch: mild weather, a good month to visit, though afternoons can run a little hotter than expected, with temperatures going up to 23-26°C. Standard packing: short sleeves for the day, a thin layer for the evening, since nights stay noticeably cooler than the afternoon peak. Daegu's specific spring draw is cherry blossom season at Palgongsan mountain and Donghwasa Temple, regulars calling the sight genuinely memorable rather than a routine seasonal note. Our record: 24.4°C days, 13.6°C nights, 7.2 rain days and 9.7 hours of sun — mild-to-warm and reasonably dry, matching the “best weather stretch, can run warm” read.

Daegu forum regulars, drawing on the broader Korea autumn conversation, split October cleanly: if you want warm weather, September is recommended; if you want to see autumn colors, the end of October/beginning of November is best — October itself sits as the genuine transition between the two. Daegu's own specific autumn draw is the Daegu Arboretum's chrysanthemum festival, running the second and third week and weekend of November, just past the target month, with regulars already praising the site's foliage through October. Standard regional framing applies: crisp air, comfortable temperatures, good conditions for both city sightseeing and countryside day trips. Our record: 20°C days, 10.9°C nights, 3.8 rain days and 8.6 hours of sun — mild and dry, matching the “genuine transition, foliage building toward its peak” read.

Forum posters cite late-November daytime temperatures in Daegu around 7-10C, with cold fronts capable of pushing overnight lows down to -2 or -3C - posters compare the general feel to a Sheffield December. Posters describe South Korea's November more broadly as ranging roughly 0-10C depending on time of day and how far into the month, consistently recommending thick jackets or coats with layers underneath. Posters generally describe November as sitting in an awkward gap season-wise, past peak autumn foliage but before any real snow, though the cool, dry weather itself stays comfortable for walking and sightseeing. Posters generally rate November as a genuinely chilly but manageable time to visit Daegu, proper winter-transition layers the main preparation needed.
