Maschen & Abzocke

A traveler recounts taking what looked like an ordinary taxi from the airport to a hotel in Bucharest's Old Town, only to be asked for RON 200 at the end of the ride, roughly three to four times what the trip should have cost based on standard rates. The lesson drawn from it: only get into taxis with visible company branding and a working, visible meter, or better yet book through the Bolt or Uber apps so the fare and route are locked in and displayed before the ride even starts.

Notizen von Reisenden zu Bukarest

Was Leute sagen, die dort waren – zuerst die ganzjährigen Notizen, dann Monat für Monat.

Bucharest forum threads describe January as genuinely cold but variable, with posters citing a range roughly between -5C and 10C, and late-January days sometimes stretching as warm as 15C. Real snow accumulation was described as less common than it used to be in recent winters, with occasional snowstorms rather than a reliably snowy month, though posters noted a proper snowy December still happens and transforms how the city looks. Despite the cold, posters were consistently positive about a January visit, with almost all major tourist attractions staying open and fewer crowds than the warmer months. The standard advice was simply to pack proper winter clothing and expect a genuinely cold but entirely workable month for sightseeing.

Bucharest forum regulars describe March as a genuine transition month: daytime readings “usually range between 5°C-20°C,” with mid-March “starting to feel spring-like (10-20°C during the day)” though rainy/gray days remain a real possibility. Snow at low elevation stays possible early in the month but becomes increasingly unlikely as it wears on, and any cold snap typically doesn't last very long or stays confined to nighttime and the mountains. The consensus lean: mid-March is acceptable for visiting, with the Old Town around Lipscani street, the Village Museum in Herăstrău Park and the Palace of Parliament named as the standard stops regardless of which version of the weather shows up. Our record: 12.2°C days, 1.2°C nights, 8 rain days and 6.9cm of snow — cool with real snow and rain risk, matching the “transition month, spring-like by mid-month” read.

Regulars split April here by half: the early part is acceptably warm at 15 to 20C but changes fast - sunny, then cloudy or wet, then sunny again inside a few hours - while by the middle of the month it settles nearer 20C. Our row gives 19.4C days against 4.8C nights that feel like 2C, so the swing is vertical as well as hour to hour, and a coat is still an evening item. Rain is moderate at 52.9mm across 7 days with a trace of snow still on the books. What the month is for is the parks: Herastrau and the open ground on the city's edge, at the point where they turn green. The record: humidity 67 percent, 9.9 hours of sun and AQI 50.

May in Bucharest is warm without being hot, and by late May regulars put it at 25 to 30C - our row's 23.6C average high is the whole-month version, sitting over a 9.5C night that is the part people underpack for. On rain they are precise in a useful way: expect it, but not in quantity, mostly cloud with short showers in the afternoon or evening and lengthy dry stretches between them. Our row's 77.9mm across 9.1 days is that pattern, and it is the wettest month of the Bucharest year. So: something warm over a t-shirt for the evenings and a jacket that sheds a shower. September is the drier alternative they offer. The record: 11 hours of sun, humidity 68 percent and AQI 48.

Regulars are blunt that this month can get really, really hot despite still counting as early summer, with several posters saying the conditions here end up barely different from deep August. Our row backs that genuinely hot read, 29.4C reading as a hot 31C, over 14.9C nights, with 91.3mm of rain across 8.5 days and humidity at 66 percent. Regulars are consistent that air conditioning isn't a nice-to-have this time of year but a real booking requirement, several posters specifically warning against older guesthouses that lack it. Evenings do cool down enough for outdoor dining once the sun sets, a real relief after a hot afternoon spent sightseeing. The record: 12.6 hours of sun, a 13.3 kph wind and AQI 50.

July and August are the hottest months here and regulars do not soften it - one calls the August heat unbearable, and locals get out of the city when they can. Our row reads 32.5C at 54 percent humidity, so it is dry heat rather than heavy, with nights falling to 16.1C, a sixteen-degree drop that makes the evenings the usable part of the day. Rain is scarce at 31mm across 3.3 days. Their reassurance is about opening hours: unlike western Europe, nothing much shuts here in August - the museums, shops and restaurants stay open and only the theatres take the month off, so a quieter city is still a working one. The record: 12.1 hours of sun and AQI 44.

Bucharest's forum calls September still summer-like by day, sometimes over 30°C, but genuinely cooler at night. Regulars flag rain as more likely toward the end of the month, so packing for both a warm afternoon and a wet one is the standard advice.
