December splits at the middle, and both halves of the split point the same way. February is norte season and regulars will not pretend otherwise: the cold fronts run from about mid-December through February and are at their worst now, arriving with wind and rain, usually lasting two or three days, and generally shutting down the water activities while they blow. Some Februaries are gorgeous and some are windy and cool. Two things they say to settle nerves. The ferries do not cancel for a norte - hurricanes yes, this no - and the island has a sheltered side: the Cancun-facing west stays warmer and calmer while the east takes it. Two corrections for an April trip to Isla Mujeres. The whale sharks are not here yet: the season runs from about 1 June to early September, with late July and August the peak, so a late-April tour is at best a long shot. And sargassum is: the season opens in late February and April to June is its worst stretch, arriving almost daily and in quantity. What April does offer is shoulder-season pricing, warm water, and fewer people - except around Easter, which regulars say to dodge if crowds bother you.
