A guide to visiting Knossos from Heraklion recommends touring the Heraklion Archaeological Museum first, not after, since seeing the original frescoes, Linear B tablets, and Minoan artifacts beforehand makes the site's reconstructed rooms and blank walls far more meaningful once you actually walk through them. Their heat warning for Crete's summers: go to Knossos early morning or later afternoon and avoid the site entirely between noon and 2pm, bringing a hat, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle regardless of the time you visit.

Gidenlerin orası hakkında söyledikleri — önce yıl boyu geçerli notlar, sonra ay ay.
Forum posters put typical March daytime temperatures at 15-20C, occasionally a bit higher, with days more often bringing a short shower or nothing at all rather than sustained rain - one recent late-March/early-April trip report described genuinely warm days (20-27C) with cooler nights around 15C. Mornings and evenings stay cold even on a beautiful day, and posters note the atmosphere itself often has a marvelous clarity that makes for especially good visibility and light. Crete's south coast is repeatedly named as running milder and drier than the north coast (where Heraklion sits) at this time of year. One practical tip: hotel rooms can run chilly and damp in March, so confirming reliable heating before booking is worth the extra check.
Regulars are specific this month splits cleanly - the first ten days still capable of the odd showery day and a cool sea, while shower-free days far outweigh the wet ones by mid-month, and late May can already turn genuinely hot with little to no rain chance left. Our row backs that mild-to-warm read sitting across that range, 24.1C over 15.8C nights, with 37.4mm of rain across 5.5 days and humidity at 63 percent. Regulars are consistent air quality and clarity feel notably fresh and clear early in the month, ideal for walking before the heat properly sets in. The sea sits at a cool 19.1C, still brisk early on but warming steadily as the month goes on. The record: 12.3 hours of sun, a 13 kph wind and AQI 49.
Heraklion-forum threads on June weather call it settled and warm to hot from the start of the month, getting hotter the further in you go - definitely beach weather, with days reckoned at 30C-plus on the warmer stretches. Evenings stay comfortable for most of the night, though it can drop into the high teens Celsius in the very early hours, and a light summer dress works fine except for the occasional cool evening when the wind picks up. The sea runs pleasantly warm by most accounts, though a few visitors find it a touch cool on first entering. Regulars call June one of the most pleasant months on the island specifically because it's less busy and less intensely hot than July or August. The record: 27.8C days feeling like 30C, 20.2C nights, just 16mm across 2.5 days, a 23.2C sea, 60 percent humidity and 13.2 hours of sun.
July is one of the hottest months on the southernmost island in Europe, and the Crete forum's regulars say the nights follow the days - if it is very hot by afternoon it stays hot after dark - with wind most people treat as relief rather than nuisance. The meltemi is the exception: it usually arrives in the last fortnight of August rather than early July, and where it does blow it hits the south and makes sunbathing miserable by throwing sand across the beach. The rest of the time the south coast is the sheltered side and the place regulars send you for a reliable breeze. Their own pick of the year is June or September, cooler and quieter both. The record: 30.1C days, 23.3C nights, 1.1 precipitation days, 13.1 hours of sun and a 27.3C sea.
August is Crete's hottest month and the forum's word for it is African: averages near 30C by day and 22 at night, but with plenty of days at 35 and some at 40, and nights that will not drop below 25. Our row for Heraklion gives 29.8C and 23.3C, reading as 32C. The thing that makes it liveable is the meltemi, which starts around the end of July and blows through August from the north - regulars say plainly that it takes the sting out of the heat. Heraklion is on the north coast, where that wind is strongest, and a few southern spots get it anyway through channelling. Their honest advice for August is to plan nothing: the beach, or the shade. May and September are the alternatives. The record: 1.4 precipitation days, 12.5 hours of sun and a 27.7C sea.
Crete's forum rates September as close to the island's best month — still genuinely hot and swimmable through the first two or three weeks, cooling only gradually toward the end. Regulars call it statistically more reliable than October, with a light layer for evenings by the sea the only real concession to the season turning.
October on this island splits into two halves and the board is precise about where. Early October can still reach towards 30C on a good day; around the middle of the month the weather turns, usually a storm and a couple of days of heavy rain, after which it often comes back warm and dry. Our row averages 24.1C over 17.5C with 33.3mm across only 4.1 days, which is that pattern flattened into a month. On the sea they run warmer than our column - they say 26C, ours reads 23.8C - still swimming water either way, and they add that unheated pools now cool faster than the sea does. Their other advice is about where to stay: seasonal resorts start shutting through the second half of October, while a year-round town like this one keeps working. The record: humidity 76 percent, 9.9 hours of sun and AQI 40.
