We based ourselves in the old town, cobblestone streets leading straight down to the water, and walked the long lakeside promenade most evenings rather than driving anywhere. A boat trip out onto the lake was the best money we spent, the water turning a startling turquoise once you're away from the shore. We swam at Potpesh Beach in late August when the water had finally warmed up properly. Ohrid trout, grilled simply and served lakeside, became something of a daily ritual, and we understood the Balkan coffee-culture reputation after watching locals hold a single espresso at a café table for a couple of hours.
