Five Flower Lake is the one photo everyone chases, and when the sun angle is right the calcium-carbonate-clear water genuinely does show patches of deep blue, emerald and gold at once. The valley sits between about 1,900 and 3,100 meters, so we kept a slow pace on the boardwalks and used the shuttle buses between zones rather than trying to walk the whole park. We went in mid-October and the maple and birch forest around the lakes had turned gold and crimson, mirrored perfectly in the turquoise water. Sturdy shoes and a layered jacket mattered more than we expected given how mild the walk itself is.

Что говорят те, кто там был: сначала заметки на весь год, потом месяц за месяцем.
Jiuzhaigou-forum reviews on a January visit describe far fewer tourists as genuinely standard, one visitor naming highlights still open with waterfalls and lake views fully intact despite the season. Regulars call overnight snow genuinely common, several posters recalling buses fitted with chains and a real frozen waterfall as part of a winter visit. Posters call Long Lake and Panda Lake genuinely the two spots that reliably freeze solid, several regulars naming these as the real highlights of a winter trip here. Regulars call partial trail and section closures genuinely the main catch, several threads naming this the real tradeoff for visiting during the quieter winter months. Posters recommend checking current trail status before a January trip, several regulars calling this standard given how much winter access can vary by section. The record: 1.8C days, -8.7C nights, 18.8mm across over 6 days and 65 percent humidity.
Jiuzhaigou-forum threads on late-April conditions describe daytime readings as genuinely pleasant, one visitor recalling comfortable sunshine with highs in the upper teens to mid-twenties Celsius, though nights stayed considerably colder given elevation. Posters call the famous winter snowcap scenery already gone by this point, the valley shifting into a greener spring identity. Regulars describe real layers as essential regardless of how warm midday feels, the swing between day and night genuinely significant. Posters recommend an early start to beat crowds and any afternoon cloud buildup. Regulars call the turquoise lakes and waterfalls worth visiting in any season. Posters recommend checking a current forecast given how quickly mountain weather here shifts. The record: 13.2C days feeling like 13C, 2.9C nights, a notably high 35.1cm of fresh accumulation and 75 percent humidity.
Late May is one of the stretches Jiuzhaigou regulars recommend - not cold, not warm, and quieter than the autumn - with an honest caveat attached: May can be short of water, and the water is what people come for. October and November are when the lakes and hillsides are most saturated, and November gets named as the pick of the year, golden and not yet cold. The date to route around inside May is the Labour Day holiday at the start of it. Reports from that week are rain, cold and packed buses, and regulars are blunt that on a Chinese public holiday there is nowhere in the park to hide. The record: 17.2C days, 7.4C nights, 22.5 precipitation days carrying 155.5mm, 12.2cm of late snow and only 7.9 hours of sun.
Jiuzhaigou's forum calls late May into June a good window — not cold, not hot, less crowded than the famous autumn colors of October, with the whole park turning green and full of blossoms. Regulars flag June rain as fairly regular but usually short-lived, and note the park's high altitude keeps it comfortable even when nearby Chengdu starts heating up toward the end of the month — landslides on the mountain road in are the more practical concern during the rainy stretch.
Jiuzhaigou-forum threads asking whether August is a good season to visit call it one of the best for scenery, posters describing this as the wetter stretch when the lakes and waterfalls run at their fullest. Regulars call a shower entirely possible on any given day, real bad luck needed for it to spoil an entire stay. Posters call August genuinely the busiest month too, falling squarely within Chinese summer holidays with families traveling in real numbers. Regulars recommend arriving around seven thirty in the morning, beating the shuttle queues and reaching popular viewpoints before crowds build. Posters call the road in from Chengdu worth checking conditions on, the wetter season occasionally affecting this route given the terrain. Regulars call the water levels this time of year the clear payoff for putting up with both the rain risk and the crowds. The record: 22.2C days feeling like 24C, 14.8C nights, an extraordinarily high 155.9mm across 21 days and 85 percent humidity.
Jiuzhaigou-forum threads on weather describe a typical September day as opening clear with genuine sunshine, one visitor reporting a great morning followed by rain rolling in after lunch, though generally not falling hard enough to ruin the day's plans. Posters call September the start of the genuine autumn high season, summer school-holiday crowds thinning out while the celebrated color display begins building toward its peak in the back half of the month. Regulars recommend real layers regardless of the morning forecast, mountain weather capable of shifting from comfortably warm to genuinely chilly within the same day. Posters call the multicolored lakes the standout regardless of conditions, clearer afternoons generally rewarding photographers with the most vivid water color. Regulars call September and October together the strongest window for a visit. The record: 18.6C days feeling like 17C, 11.7C nights, an extraordinarily high 233mm across over 23 days and 86 percent humidity.
Jiuzhaigou-forum threads on October timing call mid-month genuinely the best window, posters citing the seventeenth through the twenty-sixth as when leaves reliably turn their fullest yellow and gold. Regulars call the first week of October a real mistake to avoid, Golden Week crowds and inflated prices cited repeatedly as reasons to skip that specific stretch. Posters call visits after the twenty-fifth a real gamble too, several posters noting most leaves have typically fallen by that point. Regulars call the three weeks following Golden Week genuinely the park's busiest stretch of the entire year despite the crowd downsides, scenery during clear days considered the best of any month. Posters recommend booking accommodation well ahead regardless of exact October dates, availability here considered genuinely tight through the whole peak color window. The record: 13.3C days feeling like 12C, 6.1C nights, an extraordinarily high 129.6mm across nearly 23 days and 78 percent humidity.
Forum posters describe December average temperatures around freezing, ranging roughly -2 to 10C, with sub-zero conditions genuinely possible - posters recommend preparing for real winter cold rather than a mild late-autumn feel. Snowfall isn't guaranteed early in the month but is a real possibility, and posters say a fresh dusting paired with sunshine makes for especially beautiful scenery. On the frozen-lake question specifically, posters note only Panda Lake and Long Lake reliably freeze solid most years, with others freezing only partially or staying open - so the park's famous vivid lake colors remain visible even in deep winter. December through April is the park's low season, meaning far fewer crowds and easier hotel deals, though the Grass Lake, Swan Lake and Virgin Forest sections do close for the winter while the rest of the park stays open.
