We based ourselves in Salta for three days and used it as a launchpad for day trips, one out to Cafayate through the red-rock Quebrada de las Conchas and another into the salt flats at Salinas Grandes, which sit high enough that we brought altitude pills just in case. In the city itself we ate our way through the empanada scene at El Patio de la Empanada, a dozen for the price of a coffee back home. The one warning we wish we'd taken more seriously was about the tap water, since a friend on a separate trip through Salta got genuinely sick from it and lost several days to recovery.
