We walked the whole Old City on foot, the spice-scented alleys of Souq al-Hamidiyah leading us right up to the Umayyad Mosque, which felt genuinely awe-inspiring given how much history the city carries. A local guide walked with us for a few hours and was patient with our questions, pointing out details in the old courtyard houses we'd have missed entirely on our own. We lost count of how many times a shopkeeper insisted we sit for tea or coffee, refusing would have felt rude given how it's clearly meant as genuine hospitality rather than a sales tactic. We dressed modestly and asked before photographing anyone, which was met with nothing but warmth in return.
