Eten & drinken

Chongqing earns its Hotpot Capital nickname honestly, with something like 100,000 hotpot restaurants stacked into a city that grows straight up the mountainsides. As first-timers we ordered a yuanyang split pot, half fiery mala broth and half clear, so we could dial back the heat without losing the experience. We skipped the touristy Jiefangbei strip after the first night and found better, cheaper hotpot a few blocks over. The metro turned out to be the easiest way to handle the city's brutal hills, and having Alipay set up before arriving saved us constant cash headaches.

Reizigersnotities over Chongqing

Wat mensen die er zijn geweest over de plek zeggen — eerst de notities voor het hele jaar, daarna maand voor maand.

China forum threads describe January in Chongqing and the wider Sichuan basin as genuinely comfortable relative to the harsh cold gripping northern China this time of year - typical temperatures sit somewhere in the 0-10C range, noticeably milder than Beijing or the northeast. Posters flagged the region as slightly wet through winter, with grey, damp days more common than crisp cold snaps. Compared to the biting dry cold further north, Chongqing's winter was consistently described as a gentler, if less picturesque, alternative for anyone building a January China itinerary around avoiding the harshest weather.

Regulars call February a poor month here for two reasons that have nothing to do with the thermometer. Buildings south of the Yangtze have no indoor heating, so 15.2C by day and 7.5C at night is a temperature you live in rather than escape, and our 4.7 hours of sun a day is the grey this city is known for. The other is the calendar: the spring festival moves with the lunar year and travel around it is the heaviest on earth, with sites overloaded once families finish visiting - so look up where it falls before booking anything. Rain is light at 30.2mm across 8 days. The record: humidity 74 percent, a 9.3 kph wind and AQI 135.

A Chongqing-forum thread on spring packing (asked about April, but the answer applies just as much to the run-up in March) describes a city easing out of its foggy winter: less mist downtown than deep winter, though it still lingers over the surrounding mountains, and temperatures that can swing suddenly enough that posters warn against packing for just one kind of day. March itself is generally described elsewhere on the forum as milder than February with more sun and less rain than April, spring flowers starting, and both crowds and prices lower than summer. The record shows the swings in the data too: 20.9C days, 12C nights, 82mm of rain spread across a notably high 14.3 days, and just 5.4 hours of sun - one of the cloudiest, dampest entries on this city's whole calendar, with an AQI of 133 that keeps the postcard blue sky rare even on a dry day.

Chongqing's forum rates April as one of the better months before summer's notorious heat and humidity arrive — mild enough for the cable car ride across the Yangtze, still cool at night with a real gap between day and evening temperatures. It's shoulder season pricing too, regulars note, well before the Qingming holiday crowds if your dates land right.

Chongqing forum regulars are candid the city's reputation is a summer thing — famous for brutal heat — and October falls well outside that stretch, described as “somewhat comfortable during the day and a bit cooler at night.” China-wide October threads generally rate it better than September for traveling, with layering (rather than thick coats) the standard packing advice since cardigans and sweaters are cheap and easy to buy locally if the temperature swings. The one thing regulars don't flag as a weather issue but is worth knowing: Chongqing Zoo's panda enclosure draws long queues right at opening. Our record: 21.5°C days, 15.9°C nights, 15 rain days, an AQI of 112 and just 4.2 hours of sun a day — mild but genuinely grey and damp, with the low sunshine number the “comfortable” framing tends to leave out.

The cruises run every day this month and the boats are half empty, because November is low season here for a reason the nickname gives away: this is the city of fog, and November is one of its worst months for it. Our sunshine column is the proof - 3.9 hours a day, tied with October and January for the least of this city's year, under 19C days and 12.4C nights. Regulars are blunt that the Three Gorges in fog is a waste of the trip, so the decision is whether cheap and quiet beats the odds on a view. Rain is modest at 54.9mm across 9.8 days; the grey is cloud rather than downpour. The record: humidity 80 percent, an 8.8 kph wind and AQI 136.
