Skull Tower was the single most sobering site we visited anywhere in the Balkans, built by the Ottomans from the skulls of rebel fighters after the 1809 Battle of Čegar, and quite a few of the original skulls are still embedded in the structure, so we understood why some travelers choose to skip it. The entrance fee was under two euros and worth every cent for the history alone. Niš Fortress itself, by contrast, is free and felt like an entirely different kind of visit, a sprawling park inside thick Ottoman walls with Roman and Byzantine foundations still visible if you look for them, perfect for an unhurried evening stroll.
