hiking
We booked two nights specifically to give Seoraksan a full day without rushing back to Seoul the same evening, and it was the right call once we saw how much the park offered beyond a quick cable car ride. The Ulsanbawi Trail was tougher than we expected, endless stepped pathways that made the climb manageable but genuinely tiring by the top. We'd packed snacks and extra water after reading enough warnings about the exposed sections. Traveling down on a Friday meant a surge of buses full of locals also heading up to climb, so we'd plan around that timing differently next time. Abai Village, with its North Korean heritage and distinct character, and a fresh seafood dinner at the traditional market rounded out our one full day in town.
Catatan pelancong tentang Sokcho
Kata mereka yang pernah ke sana — catatan sepanjang tahun lebih dulu, lalu bulan demi bulan.
Forum posters name May-June as South Korea's best overall weather stretch - warm, generally dry, short sleeves by day with a thin layer for the evening - though they flag a real cutoff around the fourth week of June, when monsoon season typically arrives with heavy, sticky rain. Sokcho Beach itself is described as beautiful sand with very few swimmers in late June specifically, since the genuine beach-going crowds don't show up until July-August when Koreans flock there in force. Posters recommend early-to-mid June as the ideal window for a Sokcho visit - warm enough to enjoy the beach and nearby Seoraksan National Park without either the monsoon risk of late June or the summer crowds of peak season.
South Korea forum posters single out Sokcho as one of the more reliably snowy spots to visit in December, thanks to its position right up against Seoraksan mountain - one traveler described snowbanks piled up well above waist height after a storm. Daytime temperatures sit right around or below freezing, and it's colder than most of Seoul at the same time of year, but attractions and the mountain cable car generally keep running unless a storm is actively passing through. It's a good pick specifically because you're more likely to see real snow here than in the flatter cities further south.
