practical
We ditched the idea of driving entirely and just walked the roughly two square miles of the Historic District, which turned out to be exactly the right call for a city built on Spanish-moss-draped squares. We made a loose goal of passing through as many of the 22 squares as we could without forcing it, since Savannah rewards a slow pace more than a checklist. Flat shoes were essential given how much of the walking is on brick sidewalks and cobblestones. We visited in April and the flowering trees along the squares made the whole walk feel considerably more romantic than photos suggest.

Savannah forum threads describe January as genuinely mild for winter, with a typical daily high around 61F and low near 43F, though posters noted real range on either side - lows can dip into the 20s and highs occasionally reach into the 70s or 80s on an outlier day. The consistent daily pattern posters described: a cool, sometimes chilly morning that warms up noticeably by noon under typically sunny skies, meaning short sleeves and light jackets often both make an appearance in the same day. January and February were flagged as a genuine low season here, with fewer tourists and noticeably lower hotel rates than the warmer months, making the mild-but-variable weather a fair tradeoff for posters prioritizing a quieter visit.
Regulars are specific about two things in February: it is too early for the main azalea display, which they date to mid-March, though a few blooms show up early in the sunniest spots; and the coast runs about ten degrees warmer than Atlanta while still needing a real jacket after dark. Our row backs both, 20.5C reading as 20C over 8.4C nights feeling 6C, with 70.4mm of rain across 5.7 days. The advantage of the month is crowds rather than blooms - January is slow and February only picks up gradually, well ahead of the high rates and booked-out hotels that spring brings with its flowers. The record: humidity 76 percent, 7.9 hours of sun, a 22 kph wind and AQI 40.
Late March in Savannah is close to perfect by the forum's reckoning - days of 60F and better, some cool nights, and the dogwoods and azaleas coming out from about mid-month. Our row gives 22.9C days against 10.6C nights, which is that cool-night gap in figures. Three caveats they raise. There is usually one more cold spell between early March and St Patrick's Day, with nights below 40F. The 17th itself is the one date to avoid unless the crowds are the point, because the festival fills the town. And gnat season starts in March and runs to May. The record: 6 precipitation days carrying 80.5mm, a 22.8 kph wind and 9.3 hours of sun.
Savannah's forum calls late March into April genuinely beautiful — warm, short-sleeve weather most days, with the occasional light, quick shower rather than a washed-out day. Regulars compare the feel to mid-October further north, and note the city gets noticeably busier as word gets around.
Regulars call this a genuinely fantastic month, warm without yet tipping into the thick, oppressive humidity that defines June onward, with sunny days in the 80s Fahrenheit and rain chances still comparatively low. Our row backs that warm, still-manageable read, 29.3C reading as a hot 31C, over 18.2C nights, with 99.1mm of rain across 6.9 days and humidity at 73 percent. Regulars are specific this window is worth prioritizing over deep summer for anyone planning to walk the historic squares extensively, since the heat index climbs sharply just weeks later. Light, breathable fabrics remain the standard packing advice even this early. The record: 11.2 hours of sun, a 21.4 kph wind and AQI 46.
Savannah forum regulars call October close to the year's ideal month: “80s during the day and 50s at night,” usually lower humidity than the summer stretch, with fewer big rain events than earlier in fall and weather that should be beautiful for walking the squares. The day-night swing is real enough to plan around — a light jacket or sweater matters as much for air conditioning that can run cold indoors as for the cooler evenings outside. One genuine bonus regulars note: the water stays warm enough for a swim even this late in the season. Our record: 25.4°C days, 17.4°C nights, 8 rain days and a 27°C feels-like high — mild, dry and comfortable, matching the “ideal month, real day-night swing” read closely.
Regulars call November the start of the southern autumn and then manage the expectation it creates: this is a semitropical city of live oaks, so it stays green, and anyone arriving for northern colour will find some dark red and brown leaves on the ground by the end of the month and nothing scenic. What the month is for is walking - the squares, the riverfront, and the beach out at Tybee - with everything open year-round. Their averages of 71F and 48F are our 21.5C over 9.9C, warm by day and chilly after dark, and about 18C around Thanksgiving. The record: 73.9mm across 6.8 days, humidity 75 percent, 7.9 hours of sun and AQI 35.
