We joined the free walking tour that leaves from City Hall at 11am and it turned out to be the right way to get oriented before wandering the Old Town on our own later. Plovdiv is built across seven hills and the cobbled streets get genuinely steep in places, so comfortable shoes mattered more than we expected. What stuck with us most were the Bulgarian Revival houses, jewel-toned facades and carved wooden supports with bird and floral motifs, tucked behind unassuming gates. The Ancient Roman Theatre, still in active use since the 1st century AD, was the one sight that made the city's 8,000-year history feel real rather than abstract.
Catatan pelancong tentang Plovdiv
Kata mereka yang pernah ke sana — catatan sepanjang tahun lebih dulu, lalu bulan demi bulan.
Forum posters describe March in Bulgaria as genuinely unpredictable, capable of a bright sunny day and a snowstorm within the same short stretch, with coastal areas typically in the teens Celsius, not especially windy, and often surprisingly sunny and warm-feeling despite it still being early spring. Posters generally recommend preparing for temperatures around freezing and wet, muddy ground with suitable footwear regardless of the specific forecast. Posters describe mountain areas as still fully wintry this time of year, with lakes completely frozen and covered in roughly a meter of snow, and temperatures there swinging as widely as +10C to -20C. Posters generally describe Plovdiv itself as a substantial, historic city rather than a small town, worth a proper visit regardless of March's variable weather.
Forum posters call September a genuinely good time to visit Bulgaria - cooling gradually from summer, with harvest season bringing the country's food to its best, though the weather itself stays a mixed bag: plenty of great sunny stretches alongside a real chance of rain and thunderstorms. Bulgarian summer is described as running unusually long, from late April sometimes through the first weeks of October, so September can still deliver warm days up to 35C on occasion even as the season turns. For Plovdiv itself, posters consistently recommend budgeting a couple of days for the historic architecture, Roman ruins and the city's strong restaurant and hotel scene.
