practical
Rainmaker Mountain lived up to its name almost daily, so we kept a sturdy umbrella with us everywhere and dressed in light cotton rather than anything that would stay damp. The aiga buses turned out to be the most fun way to get around, a dollar a ride, flagged down with a palm-down wave, and packed with local conversation the whole way. Speed limits around the harbor are strictly obeyed at 20 mph, so what looks like a short drive on the map can genuinely take thirty or forty minutes. Fagatogo Market was where we ate best and cheapest, and panikeke banana fritters became a daily habit by the end of the trip.
Catatan pelancong tentang Pago Pago
Kata mereka yang pernah ke sana — catatan sepanjang tahun lebih dulu, lalu bulan demi bulan.
Pago Pago's forum, including at least one long-term resident, describes the climate as remarkably constant - hot, humid, and around 85F with matching humidity nearly every day of the year, February included. This month falls within the technical December-to-March 'hurricane season,' but posters were quick to note a severe direct hit is rare, roughly once every 25 years, since the island sits at the edge of the belt rather than in its center. The more realistic expectation for a February visit is near-daily heavy rain showers rather than a hurricane threat - locals just build outdoor plans around the near-constant humidity.
Forum posters place August within the May-October 'trade winds' season, generally considered the more favorable stretch of the year with somewhat cooler, breezier conditions than the wetter months. Temperatures stay fairly constant around 85-86F with humidity commonly cited near 85%, and posters candidly note it takes new arrivals roughly six months to fully adjust to the daytime heat, even though evenings are described as genuinely pleasant and cool. Despite being in the better season, some rain and humidity should still be expected rather than ruled out. Ofu Island, reachable via a weekly flight from Pago Pago, gets flagged as a worthwhile add-on for anyone with extra time.
