Midges do not hatch this early - it is rare before May and sporadic until mid-June - so the walking is done without them, and the main season has not started, so the roads are quiet. April, May and June are also the driest months of the year on this coast. May is the month Skye-forum regulars name when someone asks how to miss the midges: they need warmth to get going and generally do not until June or July, and posters who have walked the worst-known spots in early May report none at all. May and June are also the island's better weather months, with May usually the least wet of the year - though Skye is big and mountainous enough to make its own weather regardless of any forecast.
