We visited during the dry season, May through November, when temperatures stayed in a comfortable 20 to 30 degree range and let us hike the spiny forest without the discomfort we'd have faced in the wet months. Ifaty Village, a mix of traditional fishing life and quiet resorts, gave us the clearest look at local daily life of anywhere on the coast, and a boat trip through the mangroves added an easy half day. Le Jardin de Giancarlo turned out to be exactly the local institution other travelers had promised, a mixed seafood plate for under ten dollars that easily fed two of us. We packed lightweight linen and a wide-brimmed hat, both essential once the midday sun got serious.
