We felt safe walking around Moroni even after dark, which surprised us given how little we'd read about Comoros before arriving, and the whole trip ended up feeling refreshingly authentic and untouched by mass tourism. Around the Medina and the Friday Mosque we dressed modestly, shoulders and knees covered, and removed our shoes before entering any mosque. Euros turned out to be far more useful than dollars for everyday purchases. The market near the Old Port was the highlight of our stay, grilled seafood stalls and the scent of vanilla drifting from vendors selling mataba nearby. Itsandra Beach, almost empty when we visited, gave us a genuinely peaceful afternoon away from the town center.
