We stayed in Barrio Antigua and used the simple two-line metro, the overground tram running east-west and the underground line running north-south, to get almost everywhere without ever needing a taxi. Monterrey felt noticeably safer and more upscale than we expected from reputation alone, with restaurants and museums that wouldn't be out of place in a much bigger city. Parque Ecologico La Huasteca was our best day trip, jagged mountains rising sheer on both sides of a canyon trail. Metered taxis worked fine as a backup, and museum entry fees stayed cheap enough that we didn't think twice about ducking into anything that caught our eye.
