We timed our visit to land on a Sunday specifically for La Bici Ruta, when Paseo de Montejo closes to cars from 8am to noon and fills with rented bikes, live music, and street vendors for just a couple of dollars a rental. Weekend evenings around Plaza Grande and Santiago Park turned into an ongoing street festival, food stalls and live performances that we hadn't planned around but ended up structuring several nights on. We rented a car for two days specifically for a Yucatán loop, stopping at Izamal and the Lagoon of 7 Colors in Bacalar, both worth the extra driving. Yucatecan food tasted distinct enough from the rest of Mexican cuisine that it justified its own section of our trip notes.
