We started our day trip at Kita-Kamakura Station rather than the main Kamakura Station, since it's one stop earlier and puts you right at the first temples before the crowds pile up around the central station. The Great Buddha at Kotokuin was even more striking up close than photos suggest, and for an extra 50 yen on top of the 300 yen entry we climbed inside the hollow bronze statue, an odd, muffled quiet in there compared to the busy grounds outside. We deliberately went in the morning, both for the lighter crowds and for softer photo light. The temple grounds and gardens stayed calm and well kept the whole visit, making it easy to slow down rather than rush between sights.
