The one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City made Con Dao feel remarkably easy to reach given how untouched it still felt once we landed. We found a quiet stretch of clear, Caribbean-blue water near the airport close to Bãi Đầm Trầu, complete with natural shade and rocks to sit on, while Lò Vôi Beach further along had shallow, warm water that stayed thigh-deep for what felt like forever out from shore. We learned to plan beach time for late afternoon, around 4 or 5pm, when the sun softened and the crowds picked up in typical Vietnamese fashion. Sandflies caught us off guard on one beach, so we started checking with locals before settling in anywhere new. Seafood at a small spot in Con Son town beat every restaurant meal we'd had on the mainland.
