The cultural site pass, which ran us about 25 US dollars each, is required before you can get near the main ruins, and there is genuinely too much ground to cover in one day, so we picked three or four sites the night before rather than trying to see everything. Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree, and the massive white dome of Ruwanwelisaya were the two that stuck with us most. We hired a tuk-tuk driver for the day since the monuments are spread out enough that walking between them all wasn't realistic, and made sure to cover our shoulders and knees before approaching any of the sacred trees.
