Torres del Paine: hyvä tietää ennen matkaa

Matkailijoiden omia kokemuksia heidän omista kirjoituksistaan, lainattuna ja linkitettynä alkuperäiseen.

hiking

We booked our park entrance tickets and campsites four months out after reading how quickly the W Trek fills, and downloaded our QR codes while we still had internet in Puerto Natales since there's no signal at all once inside the park. A buff turned out to be worth more than our heaviest jacket, versatile enough for wind, sun, and cold depending on the hour. We'd practiced hikes with a loaded ten-kilogram pack beforehand and were glad we did once we hit the climb up into the Frances Valley. Organic Maps, downloaded offline before the trip, kept us confidently on trail the whole route even without any signal. The final push up to the towers at dawn was every bit as good as the photos promise.

Matkailijoiden muistiinpanot — Torres del Paine

Mitä siellä käyneet sanovat paikasta — ensin ympäri vuoden pätevät, sitten kuukausi kuukaudelta.

According to the Köppen climate classification, the park lies in the “temperate climate of cold rain without a dry season." The meteorological conditions of the park are variable due to the complex orography. But you have to be prepared for harsh weather. Wind and strong sun are also issues, and the weather can go through a full four seasons in the course of a day, as locals say. ====Temperatures==== The zone is characterized by cool summers, with temperatures lower than 16 °C (61 °F) during the warmest month (January). Winter is relatively cold, with an average high temperature in July of 5 °C (41 °F), and an average low of −3 °C (27 °F). ====Precipitation==== The rainiest months are March and April, with a monthly average rainfall of 80 mm. This represents double the July–October (winter) rainfall, which are the drier months. A study of the exact chemical components of the precipitation in the park has been carried out.

Torres del Paine-forum threads on January conditions are consistent this counts as the park's warmest window of the year, though posters add that doesn't mean mild - strong wind is a near-constant feature, and genuinely wintry conditions including snow remain entirely possible even at the height of summer. One regular describes rain, wind, snow and a clear sunny stretch all as plausible within a single 24-hour window here. The upside is daylight stretching to nearly 11pm, real flexibility for long trekking days on the W or O circuits. Regulars call proper layering for every condition non-negotiable regardless of how favorable the seasonal averages look on paper, since forecasts here are treated as unreliable beyond a day or two out. The record: a frigid 7.4C by day dropping to 1.1C at night, an extraordinarily high 271mm across nearly 24 days, a notably high 26.6cm of fresh snowfall and 81 percent humidity.

February is Patagonian summer and the Torres del Paine forum's regulars treat it as the warmest, settlest window - with one constant that is not optional. Summer is when the wind is strongest, and January and February bring both the wind and the crowds. One forecast quoted for a late-February week ran highs of 45 to 52F, three days of rain and winds of 20 to 45mph, and W Trek reports describe days that turn crazily windy without warning. The standing advice is layers and clothes for every season, because you can get shorts weather and winter gear in the same day. The record: 8.4C days, 1.4C nights, 20.1 precipitation days carrying 239.8mm, 22cm of snow and 8.6 hours of sun.

Torres del Paine-forum threads on trekking the O Circuit in March describe conditions as capable of real four-seasons-in-a-day swings, posters calling snow always a possibility regardless of the calendar date. Regulars recommend checking the forecast every two or three days rather than trusting anything issued further out. Posters call proper rain pants and a quality rain jacket non-negotiable, wind gusts capable of arriving suddenly even on a calm day. Regulars describe a cold-rated sleeping bag and an insulated pad as standing gear for the refugios, nights genuinely cold regardless of how the day felt. Posters call March still viable for the full circuit, fewer crowds than peak January-February a real upside for less predictable conditions. Regulars recommend real flexibility built into the itinerary given how fast plans can change. The record: 6.2C days feeling like 3C, 0.3C nights, an extraordinarily high 270.6mm across over 23 days and 84 percent humidity.

Torres del Paine-forum threads comparing April against May describe both as sitting well past the summer crowds, precipitation climbing noticeably compared to February and posters calling the shift toward colder, cloudier autumn real by this point. Regulars describe specific April reports as genuinely mixed, some stretches bringing just a day or two of real weather across a week while others see more sustained systems. Posters call one date change worth knowing, guided groups becoming mandatory on the W trek starting the first of May, a reason some target April instead. Regulars call refugios generally easier to book this time of year, camping capacity less of a bottleneck. Posters recommend real cold-weather and waterproof gear, Patagonian wind genuinely unpredictable any time of year. Regulars call the shoulder-season quiet worth it for many visitors. The record: 3.5C days feeling like 0C, -1.6C nights, an extraordinarily high 240.2mm across over 21 days and 87 percent humidity.

Torres del Paine-forum threads on visiting in May describe this as genuinely the start of winter here, posters calling cooler temperatures and real accumulation both increasingly likely from this point in the season. Regulars call Hotel Las Torres closed for the season by May, the shuttle from the Amarga entrance no longer running, a real hour-and-a-half walk replacing it. Posters describe mornings as typically clearer with afternoon cloud building, sunrise arriving notably late around nine. Regulars call real wind gusts still a factor this late in the season, some reports of considerably stronger gusts than a typical summer day. Posters recommend checking current forecasts closely rather than assuming a typical May. Regulars call the park genuinely quieter by May, a real upside for anyone comfortable with the colder, less predictable conditions. The record: 0.8C days feeling like -2C, -3.4C nights, an extraordinarily high 191.7mm across nearly 19 days and 89 percent humidity.

Forum posters describe June - Patagonian autumn - as cold, typically 0 to -5C, with the forests turning striking red and yellow. Genuinely useful counterpoint posters raise repeatedly: the ferocious winds that define Patagonian summer largely stop blowing by June, so despite the lower thermometer reading, it doesn't actually feel as cold as summer's wind-chill-heavy conditions - and winter weather here is described as notably more predictable than summer's. Hotels stay open, though some backcountry refugios (Torre Central, Cuernos) stop taking reservations after April 30, and certain park areas can close depending on snowfall. The clear trade-off: significantly fewer daylight hours for hiking than a summer visit offers.

December is Patagonian summer — among the least cold months of the year here — but the forum is unanimous that temperature is not what makes Torres del Paine hard. Summer is the windiest season, and one trip report describes four consecutive days delivering clear sky and high sun, 80mph winds, snow, hail and rain. The averages shown here read cold and snowy even in December because they cover exposed high terrain rather than only the valley trails, and that is the honest picture: it is the wind that makes you cold. Regulars pack a fleece hat or Buff for exactly that, note most campgrounds sit somewhat sheltered, and reckon the exposed sections feel far worse than the actual risk. The days are very long.
