Tbilisi: hyvä tietää ennen matkaa

A Tbilisi-based blogger's tips for first-time visitors flag that while credit cards are now widely accepted across the city, it's still worth carrying cash for smaller shops, street stalls, and market vendors who may not take card. She also notes that although Tbilisi's tap water is technically drinkable, she suggests easing in with bottled water for the first day or two while your stomach adjusts, especially before a big meal out.

Matkailijoiden muistiinpanot — Tbilisi

Mitä siellä käyneet sanovat paikasta — ensin ympäri vuoden pätevät, sitten kuukausi kuukaudelta.

Tbilisi experiences relatively cold winters and hot summers. Because the city is bounded on most sides by mountain ranges, the close proximity to large bodies of water (Black and Caspian Seas) and the fact that the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range (further to the north) blocks the intrusion of cold air masses from Russia, Tbilisi has a relatively mild micro-climate compared to other cities that possess a similar continental climate along the same latitudes. The average annual temperature in Tbilisi is 12.7 °C (54.9 °F). January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 0.9 °C (33.6 °F). July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 24.4 °C (75.9 °F). The absolute minimum recorded temperature is −24 °C (−11 °F) and the absolute maximum is 40 °C (104 °F). Average annual precipitation is 568 mm (22.4 in). May and June are the wettest months (averaging 84 mm (3.3 in) of precipitation each) while January is the driest (averaging 20 mm (0.8 in) of precipitation).…

Tbilisi forum threads describe January as the coldest month of the Georgian year, but posters were consistent the city itself stays just a few degrees above freezing rather than genuinely extreme, with real snow in the city called rare these days - no forecast, including weather-site predictions, can reliably guarantee it. The mountains were described as an entirely different story, with posters noting high passes can close due to snow and genuine winter-sports conditions await at nearby resorts like Gudauri and Bakuriani. The standard packing advice for the city itself was still a proper warm coat, jumpers, gloves, a warm cap and trousers, since even without snow the cold is real and consistent through the month.

Tbilisi forum regulars call March “the most unpredictable month of the year” — you might experience snow, rain or hot sun inside the same week, with the city itself typically “pleasant (15-20°C)” on a good day but a week can be sunny, the next week windy and cold. The mountain-versus-lowland split matters here specifically: Tbilisi and Kutaisi stay tempered, rain rather than snow, while Kazbegi, Gudauri, Bakuriani and Mestia get real snow and genuine cold in March, the ski resorts among them still fully in season. Winter clothes packed just in case is the standing advice even for a Tbilisi-only itinerary. Our record: 11.5°C days, 1°C nights, 14.8 rain days and 33.4cm of snow — cool with real, frequent precipitation, though the high snowfall total likely reflects the mountain resorts within our climate grid's catchment more than downtown Tbilisi itself, consistent with the forum's lowland-versus-highland split.

Regulars describe mostly sunny, mild spring days in the city itself, with mornings and evenings chilly enough for a jacket but nothing close to freezing, alongside occasional short rain that can occasionally stretch across a day or two. Our row backs the mild-but-damp read, 19.3C over 8.9C nights, with a real 89.7mm of rain across 13.7 days and a trace of leftover snow, 0.8cm. Regulars are specific that this mildness doesn't extend to the mountains - Gudauri and Kazbegi still hold real snow and cold this month even while the lowlands around Tbilisi and Mtskheta stay comfortable in just a jacket or light rain coat. The record: humidity 72 percent, 9.6 hours of sun, a 13.1 kph wind and AQI 45.

May is the month most Georgia regulars name first - everything is green, the mountains still hold snow, and the country is at its most photogenic - with the honest qualification that this is also when it rains. Our row carries 126.9mm across 16 precipitation days, the wettest month of the Tbilisi year, and their own estimate of five or six rainy days in the month is a fair description of how it actually lands, sporadic rather than continuous. Late May is the better half: fewer wet days, deeper green, flowers out. Rain does not close the roads to Svaneti or Kazbegi. The record: 23.7C days, 13.3C nights, humidity 73 percent and 10.3 hours of sun.

Regulars are consistent that although this counts as the first month of summer here, the real heat is still two months off, with this stretch instead capable of warm, sunny days mixed with the occasional surprisingly cool one, plus brief but genuinely heavy downpours that pass through fast. Our row backs that hot-by-day, still-showery read, 29.5C reading as a hot 31C, over 18.2C nights, with 66.2mm of rain across 11.2 days and humidity at 67 percent. Regulars are specific that T-shirts and shorts work fine for the lowland cities generally, Tbilisi included, though a light rain layer is worth having on hand given how quickly a downpour can arrive. The record: 12.2 hours of sun, an 11.7 kph wind and AQI 49.

September is harvest and it is glorious — 26°C, dry, the wine regions two hours east at their busiest. Summer here is a 35°C valley trap; the score is right to mark it down.
SeasonMap · syyskuu · 9 päivää sitten
October is the cooling-down month here, which regulars put at 16 to 24C by day, often wet enough to want an umbrella, and quiet enough to be ideal for sightseeing. Our row reads 19.6C over 10.9C with 56.4mm across 8.5 days. What gives the month its date is the harvest: the Kakheti grape picking starts in mid-September and finishes around the 15th of October, so the first fortnight can still be spent among the presses and the last cannot. The colour comes with it, on the Gombori pass road towards Telavi and up in Racha. The record: humidity 74 percent, 7.9 hours of sun, a trace of snow on the books and AQI 35.
