The one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City made Con Dao feel remarkably easy to reach given how untouched it still felt once we landed. We found a quiet stretch of clear, Caribbean-blue water near the airport close to Bãi Đầm Trầu, complete with natural shade and rocks to sit on, while Lò Vôi Beach further along had shallow, warm water that stayed thigh-deep for what felt like forever out from shore. We learned to plan beach time for late afternoon, around 4 or 5pm, when the sun softened and the crowds picked up in typical Vietnamese fashion. Sandflies caught us off guard on one beach, so we started checking with locals before settling in anywhere new. Seafood at a small spot in Con Son town beat every restaurant meal we'd had on the mainland.

Posters are clear Con Dao runs its own genuine microclimate distinct from the mainland: forecasts based on general southern Vietnam conditions are often wrong for the island specifically, so posters recommend treating mainland weather apps as unreliable and instead checking conditions once actually on Con Dao or close to departure.
Con Đảo's forum places September inside southern Vietnam's June-through-October monsoon window, but posters were clear it's rarely a washout - the typical pattern is an hour or so of rain that clears back to sun, with some visitors reporting genuinely sunny, hot days and rain arriving mainly late in the evening or overnight. Mainland weather forecasts were repeatedly called unreliable for the island specifically, so posters recommended just watching the sky rather than trusting an app. Flexible plans matter more than picking an exact date within the month.
