We hired a guide right at the archaeological site entrance for about 25 dollars and it transformed what would have been a confusing jumble of ruins into a readable timeline, a Persian fortress, a Crusader castle, and an Egyptian-era obelisk temple all layered on top of each other. The harbor itself was worth a slow walk on its own, fishing boats bobbing against pastel buildings, with plenty of cafés along the seafront to stop for coffee. Bab El Mina near the port gave us the best seafood of the whole Lebanon trip. Private transport from Beirut cost us about 30 dollars split between the group, which felt worth it for the convenience over public transit.
